Car wrecks are never fun, regardless of who is at fault. And when you’re in the midst of an accident with your luxury vehicle, it’s easy to feel confused, frustrated, scared, or angry. What should you do after an accident? Read on and commit these simple tips to memory. If an accident occurs, these steps will help reduce the stress.
1) Stay Calm
The first thing to remember is to stay calm. Whether you were hit or did the hitting, no one meant for this to happen. Take a calming breath so that cooler heads prevail and the situation doesn’t escalate to an incident of road rage on top of the accident.
It’s okay to ask others if they are all right, but do not apologize or claim fault. Allow the investigators the opportunity to do their job and assign responsibility.
2) Call for Help
If you or someone else are obviously injured, call 9-1-1 immediately. Don’t assume a witness or someone else has called. Provide as much detail as you can regarding what happened and where you are. Even in minor accidents, it’s best to call non-emergency assistance to have a trained professional assess the accident.
3) Stay Put
Did you know it’s a crime to leave the scene of an accident? Unless you feel unsafe or threatened by someone at the scene, it’s best to stay put until first responders come and can evaluate the scene. If you do feel unsafe, contact the police and tell them where the accident is, that you are leaving until they arrive and that you will return when help has come.
4) Assess Yourself and Any Passengers
If you are injured and conscious, remain calm. Call for help, if able. Or have a passenger or bystander call on your behalf. If no one appears to have major or life-threatening injuries, exit the vehicle and offer assistance to others who may have been involved. If your back or neck hurt, remain still if it is safe to do so. Await the arrival of EMTs and Paramedics who are trained to evaluate and safely move you.
5) Assess and Document the Scene
If you are impeding traffic, no one is seriously injured, and your vehicle is able to be moved, move out of the flow of traffic. Put on your hazards (whether you remain in the middle of the road or on the shoulder). Use your smartphone’s camera to document the accident scene as best as you can. This means more than just the position and damage of the vehicles. If you can document lighting and weather conditions, signs, and location, it will help make the scene clear for insurance companies and first responders.
You can also document the conditions on paper and pen (another great reason to keep these in the glove box of your car). Your memory will never be as good as at the time of the accident. Or you can make notes in your smartphone.
6) Exchange Information
Gather as much information from the other parties present as you can. This includes:
- Color, make, model, year of the vehicle(s)
- Name and insurance of other driver(s)
- Driver’s license and license plate numbers
- Contact information (address, phone)
- Name and badge number from responding officers
- Names and contact info from witnesses
- A copy of the accident report
